June 2008: Introducing Mexican poet Sergio Trejo Aparicio. Sergio is a 31 year old from Mexico City who just finished his Masters in Italian Literature after getting a degree in Fine Arts. Like many foreign students, he speaks three languages: Spanish, English, and Italian. Each month, I'll be posting a new poem from him in both Spanish and his English translation of it.

A S. R.

Blancas sandalias manchan mosaicos
con el fango del amor no correspondido.

Historia de tus días es lapidar con besos
el flotante lecho a los hijos de Sodoma

Tienes treintaitrés…
¿Y sabes qué me da más miedo?

Que tengas mi nombre

To: S. R

I look at you from far
under the perfection of a shower head
that insanely gives me comfort.

I feel your steps like the strident
shout of a couple drums.

In your neck, soldier, you show off an amorphous
necklace of warm and viscose pearls.

And I see myself in your palms when bored
you come closer: boy with the eyes of the fever.

You pronounce words, and from your motionless mouth
exudes the sour smell of tragedy.

White sandals staining the tiles with the mood
of the unfortunate love.

Story of your days it is to wipe out with kisses
the floating bed to the sons of Sodom.

You are thirty three
and you know what scares me most?

That you have my name…

Books At Undercover Books

To celebrate this holiday season, Undercover Books & Gifts is having a Children's Christmas Book reading.  Laura Ballard will read The Dinosaurs' Night Before Christmas aloud to children in the store on Thursday, December 18 at 4pm. There will be a second reading by Francis D'Eramo on Saturday, December 20 at 3:30pm.

Every Christmas Eve, the dinosaur fossils in the museum come to life to sing, dance, eat gingerbread, and be merry. And this year, a young boy who lives across the street gets to join in the magical festivities. This rollicking tale is a great Christmas treat for dinosaur fans young and old. The book includes a CD with dinosaur-themed Christmas party music and the story read aloud by Al Roker of the Today Show.

The Downhill Lie: A Hacker's Return to a Ruinous Sport by Carl Hiaasen. Tiger Woods has nothing on this guy – at least not when it comes to rescuing a golf cart from a snake-infested lake. Hiaasen wisely quit golf in 1973, but now he's back, with hilarious stories of his less-than-glorious return. He also offers touching, bitter-sweet memories about playing with his father, and tells of teh glow he feels as he now plays with his own son.

A Voyage Long and Strange by Tony Horwitz. A fresh and vivid history of post-Columbus, pre-Mayflower America. It's an irresistible exploration of the differences between fact and myth, history and legend.

General and his Daughter by Barbara Gavin Fauntleroy. A collection of more than 200 letters Major General james Gavin, commander of the 82nd Airborne, sent to his young daughter during World War II.

The Coldest Winter by the late David Halberstam. An award-winning book on the Korean War by arguably the best journalist of our time.
