This page provides information on local sports federations, upcoming sporting events on St. Croix, and sports training tips.
The St. Croix Triathlon season is now well underway. This annual sports series has now been expanded from the five triathlons to include a duathlon. The next event in the series is the annual International Ironman 70.3 & Caribbean Sprint races to be held on May 4th. Known as the "Beauty and the Beast" triathlon, the Ironman 70.3 triathlon draws both amateur and professional athletes from all over the world. This year's pro field will include Simon Lessing, Craig Alexander, Faris al-Sultan, Mirinda Carfrae, Karen Smyers, Joanna Zeiger, Nina Kraft, Michael Lavato and Julie Dibbens. If you haven't been out to support the athletes in the past, please volunteer to help this year. You can contact Tom Guthrie at 773-8456 for general volunteer information. If you are a massage therapist and want to help out in the massage tent the day of the race, please contact Jim Hoffman at 771-8498 or email St. Croix Happenings. At least 10 therapists are needed. You need to be in town before the roads are closed at 5 am on the morning of the race in order to park and get your table to the tent on the fort grounds. It is normally about 8:30-9:00 am before we actually begin working, so you can go to one of the nearby restaurants and enjoy some breakfast, or cheer the athletes on as they come out of the water and start the bike portion of the race. You have a ring-side seat throughout the race. We are normally done by 2:00 pm. We furnish the table covers, oils, hand/table sanitizing, paper towels, and limited refreshments. This year the therapists will get a special version of the race Teeshirt identifying them as a volunteer massage therapist . If you are from St. Thomas, St. John, or other off-island locations and want to volunteer, the race committee provides one night of hotel housing.

DeWayne Smith Going For All In Ironman 70.3

Known as DeWayne Smith to some, and the D-Train to others, he’s making his second year mark of living on St. Croix. He grew up in Europe for most of his adolescent life, and earned his bachelor’s degree stateside. Here on St. Croix, he makes his living as a certified personal trainer, catering to a variety of different clientele. Once a successful sprinter in NCAA track & field, D-Train transitioned into the world of triathlon on a whim and out of curiosity for the sport. Ever since completing his first sprint triathlon in 2005, which, to him by the way seemed like an eternity, he’s been hooked like most others that endure their first race! Last year, he completed the St. Croix Half Ironman with little training for that distance. To minimize the pain and suffering, he’s decided that this year is the year to do it right. For 12 months now, he’s prepared for this. He’s set the bar high for himself, gunning for a slot to either of the world championship venues: Kona or Clearwater. His performances in the local triathlon series and other events have been pleasantly surprising, and he plans to continue, full steam ahead. He is confident he can earn a slot, and so are the sponsors and friends that have rallied around him in support. It’s all or nothing come May 4th – watch out for the D-Train this weekend.
